La Paeria de Cervera has completed the rehabilitation of the old library on Carrer Major, 13-15, an emblematic building of the old town that will become a new civic and administrative space at the service of citizens and the associative fabric.
The action has had an investment of 260.000 euros (VAT included), of which 194.880 euros have been subsidized by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The works have made it possible to recover a property that presented significant conservation problems, especially on the ledge, the roof and various structural elements.
The buildings, which hosted the first public library promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya and integrates the old Romanesque church of Sant Joan, is one of the most significant heritage spaces in the old town of Cervera.
The chief paer, Jan Pomés, he emphasized that "the objective is to turn this heritage into a living space, capable of hosting cultural activities, social and associative, and to respond to the growing demand for meeting spaces". Pomés added that "recovering this building is not just rehabilitating stone; is to recover memory and collective pride".
Pomés added that "this action reflects the Paeria's commitment to the preservation of Cervera's historical heritage. For many years, buildings of great heritage value could not receive the interventions they required, and today we are reversing this situation with a determined bet to recover, maintain and value the spaces that tell our history".
The intervention, as well as preserving a key element of local heritage, contributes to the revitalization of the old town and reinforces La Paeria's commitment to enhance the city's historic buildings and turn them into useful spaces for the community.
