The Conservatory produces the opera “Dido & Aeneas” for the Night of the Museums

On Saturday 20 May, them 22 hours and in the incomparable frame of the University Paranimf, the Cervera Conservatory will stage the opera “Dido & Aeneas”, de Henry Purcell.

It is an opera that the students of the center have worked on throughout the year and which will have the singing students as protagonists, others who wanted to join as part of the choir and others who, next to the teachers, they will act as an orchestra.

Henry Purcell (London, 1659-1695) is the most important English composer of the 17th century. His work was closely linked to the royal family during the reigns of Charles II, James II, William III and Queen Mary. Although he only lived 37 years, has left a very wide catalog of works with a particular style that includes elements of French and Italian music (vocal writing), but it is worth saying that he always maintained a very genuine style.
Like most composers of his time, he learned composition by taking note of the works of the great masters of the past, com Locke, Humfrey i Blow.
In England, opera was not accepted in the same way as on the continent, in Purcell's time. From the 1660 there were several attempts to introduce Italian opera in London but they did not succeed. It is for this reason that his dramatic production was limited to openings, dances, songs and intermissions. We must consider Purcell as the first English opera author, with the composition of the first opera in the strict sense: Dido and Aeneas, Z. 626, which is quite a milestone in British musical history. It was a commission from dance master Josias Priest - who sang the male roles on the day of the premiere -.

It is a very interesting opera both vocally and historically, produced by the Conservatory, in col·collaboration of the Cervera Museum, and which will be used to celebrate the Night of the Museums. The stage direction will be in charge of Arnau Vinós; the musical direction, by Núria Mas; and the orchestra direction, by Carles Gumí.

Early entry costs 10 euros and the general, 12 euros. They can be purchased at the Museum and Conservatory of Cervera.

The Colla Infantil was born as a result of the workshops of the Aquelarret de Cervera. Currently has 50 members divided between devils and drummers. It is a gang composed of boys and girls from 8 a 14 years, made in the likeness of the Great Gang, but with children's pyrotechnics. It has the same roles, with Lucifer, Devil and standard, and small and medium clubs. Since the year 2008 incorporates the Children's Spoken Dance, with an adapted text but where the issues that concern the little devils of Cervera are also reviewed. In addition to fifty children, currently there is 44 heck more on the waiting list, so the project has allowed the culture of fire to take root in the Segarra capital, guaranteeing a relief to the big gang in the future.

The Joventuts are the last section created in the group. The boys and girls of the Colla Infantil upon arriving at the 14 years they were forced to leave the Ball of Devils and wait for the 18 to enter the Great Gang, a stop that meant that the majority did not get there. To avoid this, it was decided to create the Joventuts, with his own beast. This section brings together young people from 14 a 18 years so that there is continuity and support until making the jump to the Big Team. There are currently more than 30 members and a waiting list has also started to be created.

The Easter Festival will feature several premieres and unpublished works

The Easter Festival will feature several premieres and unpublished works

The 13th edition of the Easter Festival will be accompanied by many premieres and the recovery of almost unreleased or rarely heard pieces. This way, the contest highlights the legacy of Catalan classical music and broadens the look at rarely performed pieces by composers from our country.

One of the concerts that will have more premieres is the one that the Madrigal Choir will offer us next 2 d'abril. The choir directed by Pere Lluís Biosca will premiere the work "Lullaby" by Albert Guinovart, setting to music a text by Josep Palau i Fabre. It will also be possible to hear for the first time the work "Diré en mi tes bonances" by Joan Magrané, a work based on a text by Agustí Bartra.

Just the day before, the inaugural concert on April 1, by the Julià Carbonell Symphony Orchestra, will also highlight a work that, despite not being an absolute premiere, it has been heard on very few occasions. It is the "Intertonal Suite" by the composer Jaume Pahissa and which was performed for the first time in 1926.

After the pandemic, the Easter Festival recovers its unique concert pairing of music and gastronomy. an absolute premiere in co-production with the Pyrenees Early Music Festival, pianist Lluís Capdevila will premiere his latest album in concert, “Lament”, recorded just this February. Self-created music that sinks its roots into jazz and improvisation, always marked with the stamp of a unique and unmistakable personality. The new songs will be heard while doing some gastronomic tastings in dialogue with the sommelier Jordi Martínez, by Select Wine Store, paired with local wines.

In the Festival's desire to recover Catalan musical heritage, an unpublished work by Francesc Andreví from Segarra has also been 'rescued' and will be heard for the first time, preserved in the Cervera County Historical Archive. an absolute premiere in co-production with the Pyrenees Early Music Festival, the pianist Roger Illa will be in charge of interpreting it as part of the competition's morning concerts.

This year, the contest will revolve around Pau Casals and other composers who emigrated and suffered exile. Most of the scheduled concerts include works by Casals. In this way, tenor Roger Padullés and pianist Francisco Poyato will perform an exclusive concert with "The songs of Pau Casals", a very unknown and little interpreted part of his compositional legacy.

For its part, the Kebyart - recent winners of an Enderrock award- will perform for the first time in Catalonia the work "Quartet for saxophones" by Montserrat Campmany.

an other quartet, but in this case of rope, l'Athena, he will also perform a very rare work by Pau Casals. It is the "String Quartet in E minor" composed by Casals el 1893.

On the piano side, the Nexus Piano Duo, they will offer us the ballet "Ariel" created by Robert Gerhard the 1934 and which has also been heard live on very few occasions.

Finally, and in this compilation of premiere works or that are almost unpublished, also highlights the "Stabat Mater in Eb major" by Josep Pla and the "Salve Regina in G minor" by Manuel Pla. Two works by these brothers of great relevance, but which have been performed on numerous occasions and which will once again highlight the Catalan Baroque Orchestra right at the end of the Festival.

The Festival is organized by the Paeria de Cervera and is a meeting point for the classical music sector in Catalonia and a showcase of classical music that is made in Catalonia. It has the support of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat through the ICEC and the Diputació de Lleida through the IEI.

Advance tickets for 15 concerts that have been scheduled this year are already available on this website and have different discounts and bonuses.
